How to Run a Volleyball Tournament: Formats, Set Scoring and Standings
Volleyball tournaments have a rhythm all of their own. Matches are decided set by set, standings use a points system that rewards how you win, and a good schedule has to respect that a 3-2 five-setter takes far longer than a 3-0 sweep.
Here is how to plan for all of it.
Set-by-set scoring, briefly
Indoor volleyball is played best of three or best of five sets. Sets go to 25 points (win by 2), with the deciding set played to 15. Your scoring setup should capture every set, not just the match result — set ratios decide standings ties, and players care about them.
Formats that work for volleyball
- Pool play + knockout — the standard competitive shape. Pools of 3–4 teams playing best of three keeps the day moving; the bracket switches to best of five for semis and finals if time allows.
- Round robin — for smaller fields (up to 6–8 teams), everyone plays everyone. Most matches per team, no early exits.
- League season — weekly fixtures with a live table. This is where the official points system really matters.
The official 3-2-1-0 points table
Serious volleyball standings do not just count wins. The widely used FIVB-style system awards:
- 3 points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win
- 2 points for a 3-2 win
- 1 point for a 2-3 loss
- 0 points for a 0-3 or 1-3 loss
Taking a strong opponent to five sets earns something, which keeps late-season dead rubbers competitive. Ties are broken on sets ratio, then points ratio.
Rosters, positions and divisions
Volleyball teams travel with more players than they field. Collect full rosters at registration — setters, outside hitters, middle blockers, opposites and liberos — and run divisions (by level or age group) as parallel groups within one event rather than separate tournaments.
On the day
- Publish the schedule with realistic match windows: best-of-three pool matches average 60–75 minutes.
- Enter set scores as they finish so standings, set ratios and bracket seeds update live.
